Mash Recipe

If you were lucky enough to catch our recent podcast "Obese Again, Naturally" you heard us discuss a recipe of my own creation: Mash. It's low-cal, low-prep, high in vitamins, and more appetizing than anything in Disney Pixar's 'Ratatouille.' Many people don't love plain vegetables, but who doesn't love casseroles?? This is like a very healthy casserole just for you!
First! You will need:

1 vegetable you can stomach. My favorite to use is zuccini (about 2 medium/large or 3 or 4 small ones), but you can also use squash, spinach, or as I had on hand today: broccoli. The point of the vegetable is you want to use one that is zero Weight Watcher points. To learn more you can click HERE. You want a large amount of the vegetable, as it makes up the majority of the your mash.

Low-cal Spaghetti sauce (you will only need 1/4-1/2 a cup)

1 frozen veggie burger. Kendall and I are vegetarians, so we use these. For a carnivore you can figure out the equivalent amount of meat, but you might as well use a veggie burger as they are low-cal and are clearly marked "1 WW Point" (see photo). I especially like the Boca Bruschetta burgers and the Morningstar Farms Black Bean burger (although they are 2 points).

10 saltines

(You can also add some cooked onion, onion powder, garlic powder, any low sodium, no-cal spice that you like.)

Step One: cook your vegetable. Cook it until it is soft and mashable. I boiled my broccoli, Kendall grates his zuccini, there's no wrong way to do it so long as it's nice and soft when it's done.

Step Two: Microwave your veggie burger and mash it up.

Step Three: Add cooked vegetable to mashed veggie burger in a large bowl.

Step Four: Crush up 10 saltines into the bowl.

Step Five: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of spaghetti sauce to mixture. Use enough to satisfy your taste, but no more than 80 calories worth. (Refer to the back of the jar).

Step Six: MASH THAT SHIT UP! Once your mash has turned into something that resembles what the Pilgrims did into buckets and then tossed overboard the Mayflower, you're done!

Step Seven: Eat it! It does look awful. I admit it. BUT it tastes good!! It's like a one person casserole that will satisfy your need for a large heap of food and won't add those unwanted pounds! We all need something to keep us full around the holidays and this is something!

These Are Your Nuggets

The above photo is of a wet-food-stuff that fills your chicken nuggets and chicken patties. I always loved them as a child. And though it's pretty darn nasty, if I still ate meat I don't think I'd care. I care more about them being tortured, living lives of constant pain, and then being killed in a manner so grisly it is better suited to a "Saw" movie.

Obama Rumor

Psst!!! Don't tell ANYONE! I heard a very hush hush, on the down low, off the QT rumor that our new glorious Pres. Obama is a closet VEGETARIAN!!

That's what I hear. He's also a closet smoker, BUT he's trying to quit. A smoking vegetarian in the White House- Hello, 2009!

New Episode: 'The Vegetarian Show'

This week on the show- we get to preachin'! But don't worry meat-eaters, we still love you (as long as you listen, you can do it from death row and we'll love you).

We tell of our "journeys" to vegetarianism, and its many benefits, etc. Also- Kendall issues you a challenge!!  This plus "Things You Should Know," Bad Jokes, and an especially hilarious "History Lesson."

Next week comes our first of four 2008 Halloween episodes. This week I am out of internet range and Kendall is back at work- but don't worry, we have not forsaken you! More jokes, witticisms, and life lessons are forthcoming.

PETA Movies- Save the Animals!

I would never want to tell anyone how to live their lives, (except to say enjoy yourself, for all we know this is it) but the wonderful organization PETA has no such qualms about telling you what's what. Which is good! Our furry (and feathered, scaled, and whatever else) friends thank them. They have also put together the top 10 movies that will make you go vegetarian. See the whole list HERE.

I have to agree with "Babe"- although I ate bacon long after seeing the movie, I probably felt bad about it for a few minutes. And even though most of their choices seem to make more of a case for not eating people= "Sweeney Todd," "Soylent Green"- their inclusion of the often times boring "Fast Food Nation" makes up for it. Even though it was slow, it was a veritable vegetarian manifesto, from Bruce Willis' monologue about all the nasty extras you find in every restaraunt burger to the brutally disgusting scenes near the end on the "kill floor." I was very glad to be a vegetarian already by the time Netflix sent me that one.

Also interesting is the quote they share from looney music mogul Russell Simmons about "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." He says of the ending, "The way that woman was screaming, 'Aaaahhh,' and she's running away—that's how every animal you eat is running for his or her life."

God Hates Vegetarians

So yesterday- downtown Manhattan- Veggie Pride Parade- showed up when the big marriage between a carrot and a peapod was supposed to be taking place. Didn't see no vegetable nuptials!! The day was as wet and disgusting as a vegetarian's bowel movement, possibly causing the festivities to be bumped up. Possibly God made the animals for us to eat, as my Grandmother says.

Florida's Holy License Plates

So this is the license plate some people are trying to get Florida politicians to allow as one of the 100 or so choices of FL state vanity plates. And we think this is FINE. So long as some other options are added as well. See below.
