Why Men Wore Wigs

(Photo: the Cliff and Kendall of 1695)

Are you like Cliff and Kendall? Did you one day think to yourself "God has forsaken me and caused me to go bald! I'm fat because of Dairy Queen but my balding head is all on the Lord! Why couldn't I have been born in the glory days of yore when being obese and wearing a big puffy white wig was all the rage? Or at least why could I not have been born a pair of Jake Gyllenhaal's underwear?"

The answers to why men wore those puffy wigs is here! From yahoo! answers:

"The history of wigs goes all the way back to antiquity. In ancient Egypt it was common to shave ones head and wear wigs because of the prevalence of head lice. Since only the Wealthy and Well Born could afford to do this, wigs became a status symbol. This picked up again during the Renaissance, when antiquity began to be rediscovered and explored anew. And once again, only the wealthy and well born could afford wigs. Thus what started out as a hygienic tool became a status symbol. Except for very high ceremonial and court functions, the use of wigs as fashion statements largely died out in the 1790s due to the French Revolution and the rise of republican simplicity as an alternative fashion statement."

Damn republican simplicity! Nowadays when you need a simple republican you just look at the latest issue of In Style for a dumb-ass quote by Sarah Palin. Bitch! Let's calm down:

(Those underwears right there)

Just like "The Reader"!!

Is it wrong to hope an 88 year old geezer gets sentenced to life?!?  Well- if he's guilty- I hope he does!

In a case of backwards "ripped from the headlines"ness- THIS article explains how a retiree who lives in Cleveland has been charged with 29,000 (!!!) counts of accessory to murder for being a guard at the Nazi death camp in Sobibor.  Which makes this just like the movie "The Reader" only with some old murderer instead of Kate Winslet's extended sex scenes with that german teenager.

Happiest of B-days to Yoko and Travo!

Today of all days is the one and only Yoko Ono's birthday! While you are sending her cake and flowery type feelings, you can read one of the Yoksters poems below:

THE EARTH WAS COVERED IN CLOUDS (1956)
the earth was covered with cloudsthe breast of the dead woman was stabbed with thick nails.

the sound of the triton was lost
and the breast of the dead
woman was crammed with thick nails

swarms of dogs extended the earth
all lying, stretching, and sniffing the smell of nails
at times.
some ruminating the flowers and some
barking, barking, barking to the sky
the earth dozed to the placid wind
and the breast of the dead woman
a well drained hole.

And you know WHAT??  The once pretty good-looking John Travolta was born today and is a lot older now than in the photo below.

Baad Jokes!

Some group of egg-heads has compiled a list of the oldest jokes ever!! And prudes beware- the ancient Sumerians were a bawdy bunch! Their joke (frankly unfunny) was about a girl farting on a guy. Back then she would have been beheaded!

Other ancient bits of humor include Anglo-Saxon dick jokes and a jibe about the sex life of a Pharaoh.

Here's a modern take on filth: A math teacher asks this blonde girl what comes after 69 and she says "Like, duh! You wash your hands and rinse out your mouth!"

Read about the old jokes HERE.

History Lesson time again!!!

Okay kids, it’s that time again! You may want to take notes.

Born today in 1473, Copernicus was a great astronomer who told us the earth revolved around the sun. Of course today we know the earth revolves around Cliff and Kendall.

Skipping ahead to 1878, Thomas Edison did us all proud by patenting the phonograph. Originally thought of as a tool for office dictation, someone had the bright idea of putting music on the thing and thus the precursor to the modern mp3 was born.

A few years later in 1906 a man woke up hungry, poured some milk over some dried up old flakes of corn and then went out and founded the Kellogg’s breakfast cereal company.

In 1940, the soul singer/weepy clown Smokey Robinson was born. When the doctor was asked why he couldn’t put the newborn in a crib like all the other infants, he replied “He’s really got a hold on me.”

And finally, in 1951, February 19th saw the death of Andre Gide. Gide was a noted French author and Nobel laureate who would later be quoted on an episode of “Cliff and Kendall: Coast to Coast.” You may remember “It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.”

Another favorite Gide quotation: “Everything has been said before, but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again.”

History Lessons are funducational!

Continuing our mission to educate the masses, Kendall and I would like you to know these historical things happened today, February 1 in history. Hollaback, yo!

1982 – David Letterman began his late-night reign on NBC. Much watermelon dropping ensued.

1978- Harriet Tubman, conductor of the underground railroad, became the first African American woman to be featured on a postage stamp.

Also in 1978- Heralded filmmaker Roman Polanski fled the country after pleading guilty to boning a thirteen year old girl. Think about that the next time you watch “The Pianist.” No judgment!! (Should we judge that? Possibly. I'm actually gonna say: Yes, judge away!)

1969- Speaking of famous wangs (we kind of were, right?) Jim Morrison was arrested today for exposing himself in concert.

And back to 2008- Cliff and Kendall begin the first annual celebration of FebRUEary. See if you’ll ever spell it without the ‘e’ again!

Tell Me Lies

Believe it when we tell you that a brand new episode of Cliff and Kendall: Coast to Coast is on the way!

This week we're talking all about lies. Why do we lie? How do we lie? How can you tell if someone else is lying? (Listen for Kendall's super informational explanation of how to be your own personal lie detector- and then if that gameshow "To Tell the Truth" is revived you can clean up!! Just remember your old podcasting friends when you're looking to unload some of those winnings!)

Cliff regales the world with the tale of the first lie he ever told. Kendall tries to pull one over on our listeners and even MORE.

Also, we debut the new segment "Cliff and Kendall's History Lesson" and we again venture into the fan favorite world of "Weird News!!" (You won't believe some of the strange stuff Kendall's dug up this week! Outrageous!!)

So come along, as your old buddies explore the world of bending the truth. And there isn't one mention of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" or "Iraq is overflowing with weapons of mass destruction." Can you believe it? We forgot to get political!! You'll just have to wait for our Fourth of July Fireworks show.

Learn More!

If you were curious about things Cliff and Kendall were talking about this week, this post may help you sleep at night.

Putting on a production of "Greater Tuna" or "A Tuna Christmas" turned up on Cliff and Kendall's collective bucket list. To learn more, just click on Greater Tuna for all the answers!

Kendall spoke about the amazing History Channel special "Life After People." Learn more here.

Interested in reading more about life after death? This is (probably) the Sylvia Browne book Cliff read about life "on the other side."

Also, from the cutting room floor of Cliff and Kendall's favorite things:

Cliff's favorite website: X-Entertainment
its an incredibly funny site dedicated mostly to the nostalgia of the 1980's. If you grew up then you will love reading articles on things like He-Man, seeing old commercials, and re-experiencing the things that made our youth so "special." The site also does amazing month-long celebrations of Halloween and Christmas.
